Here's my news...
Contrary to all the press speculation re the lovely and talented
Susan Boyle, I would just like to say that as yet I have not
been approached to play her in the movie of her life...and i do
feel there is a great deal of her story yet to unfold which I
hope brings her much happiness and satisfaction. I was away on
holiday with all the family for the Bank Holiday when suddenly
all the speculation emerged and I was inundated with calls
etc...and I had seen no press so didn't know what they were
talking about.
It seems that Susan mentioned that she thought I would be ideal
to play her in a future movie of her life...I believe I even
said it in a joke when I was on the Paul O Grady show last
year....and as Susan can't utter a word without someone printing
it the whole thing became a story. If I say so myself I would be
a good choice....I am hardly tall thin and blond so the physical
leap would be easy ( too bloody easy actually!!) and I can act
and sing (though not as beautifully as Susan) and I am Scottish.
A no brainer rally...but no doubt they will end up with Michelle
Pfeiffer in a fat suit and wig with a bad Irish accent and a
dubbed over singing voice and she will win an Oscar for being
prepared to look bad!!! Such is showbiz...
Anyway...it was nice to be thought of by Susan....
Life has been busy as ever though more with real life than the
business of show....I am trying to pack as many holidays and
breaks in before I start back on Calendar Girls in July and that
will take me through till October, then Panto rehearsals in
Aberdeen which I am delighted to be returning too and then a new
series of Rab C Nesbitt...apparently the last one got great
viewing figures and was well received so the Beeb have
commissioned another...so its all go.
I have managed to see my daughters ( both of whom have had exams
so I am very glad that I am here for them to take their stress
out on) and
actually have a bit of a social life with my husband and also
see my sisters and nieces and nephews....and my dad who has been
a bit poorly
of late but doing well.
Workwise I have been able to do a lot more for the charities I
am involved in and had a fantastic fundraiser for Erskine
Hospital in April as well as the Women of Influence Awards for
NCH where I was also given an award which was undeserved by me
but humbly received. We had a fantastic night at the Pavilion
Theatre in Glasgow topped by the likes of Wet Wet Wet and Paulo
Nuttini for the legendary DJ that is Tiger Tim Stevens in May
and raised a lot for MS ..and then had great fun at the real
Radio East versus West football match for CHAS.....my nephews
loved it especially cos they got to meet football legends like
the great Gordon Durie ( still playing brilliantly), frank
MacAvenie, Alan Rough, Darren Jackson and most of all Celtic's
Scott Brown.....a great day.....I have also done a session with
Scottish Youth Theatre and many more events for others to make
up for not being at as many events and meetings as I would like.
Politically we are cranking up after the elections with the
Scottish Independence Convention ( have a look at their website
for more info)
and I have hosted some events across the country with First
Minister Alex Salmond called Ask Alex which were very well
attended and also
really interesting to be involved in. Who knows what the
coalition in Downing Street will bring...not my choice but I did
want a a hung parliament...Labour have a lot of rethinking to do
to connect with the voters they have abandoned over the last 13
years....but their Tribalism may be their undoing....
My book in paperback gets launched this week so I am at a
Glitterati book event tomorrow at Oran Mor in Glasgow then
appearing on STV's The
Hour programme before the lovely Janice Forsyth's Comedy Cafe on
BBC Radio Scotland on Friday. I am also appearing at the
Edinburgh
International Book Festival on August 24th and there are other
book events coming up beforehand...
I am doing a small part in a new movie shot in Edinburgh called
Night and Day and am appearing at the SCVO charity awards on
June 10th in
Edinburgh and am hosting a celebration concert of Pantomime
music played by the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and conducted by
my old pal
Kennedy Aitchieson at the Woodside Halls in Glasgow on the 24th
of June....and this is me "not working"!
Been in London for bits of work, interviews, photos, costume
fittings and my great pal Helena Kennedy's 60th Birthday do
which was just great. Also went to the Old Vic to see Tom
Stoppards The Real Thing cos the lovely Jordan Young is in
it...I have known him since he first started out in the biz and
worked with him again in panto so I was like a proud mum sitting
out there....he was great though the play isn't that fab....
Popped over to Belfast last week to see my best pal Andy Gray be
wonderful in the lead role of the Lyric Theatre's' The
Miser"...a great show so if you are in Ireland it is now touring
Galway and Slygoe and various towns all over. I also saw the new
cast of Calendar Girls just to get a feel for the new production
I am going into and I enjoyed it a lot...though it was weird to
watch it from the audience for the first time having been in it
for 304 performances!!!
So life is full and busy...and that's before all the Susan Boyle
stuff....great fun though eh? Good luck to you Subo...I am
actually getting called Elaine Ceebo now!!!...
Much love and all the best,
Elaine C. Smith
